Suncor Energy Foundation Donates $250,000 to Support First Nations Education, Culture, and Wellbeing through the Future Generations Foundation

The Future Generations Foundation (FG Foundation) is pleased to announce its 2025-2026 organization funding decisions. This year, the Board of Trustees has approved $12.2 million to support 105 organizations. This includes $11.1 Million from the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement and $1.07 Million from our partners and donors.

During this funding cycle, a diverse range of communities and organizations applied for funding opportunities, with approved grants ranging from $22,000 to $200,000. These funds, which can extend up to five years, will support critical initiatives in First Nations communities, including education, healing and reconciliation, training certifications, and the preservation of cultural and traditional knowledge.

Since its inception, FG Foundation has awarded $71.9 million in funding to 910 organizations, helping to create lasting change for future generations.

Over 1,100 Beneficiaries Receive Support for Culture, Education, and Training Initiatives

Akwesasne, ON – The Future Generations Foundation is pleased to announce the funding decisions for the 2024-2025 individual call for applications. This year, over 1,400 applications were submitted, and more than 1,100 beneficiaries have been selected to receive funding. A total of $5.8 million has been awarded to support individuals pursuing culture and language revitalization, post-secondary education, certification, and training.

Recipients were awarded funding in the following areas:

Cultural Learning: Funding for teachings from Elders, knowledge keepers, or experts in language, ceremonies, and traditional skills.

Training and Trades: Funding for trades programs, vocational programs, and professional development courses.

Scholarships: Funding available for post-secondary education at universities, colleges, CEGEP, or Indigenous institutes.

With this year’s investment of $5.8 million, the Future Generations Foundation strengthens its commitment to empowering First Nations individuals. This brings the total amount awarded to individuals since the FG Foundation began administering funds in 2015 to over $41 million.

Applications for the next call for individual funding call will open in April 2025.

The Future Generations Foundation provides grant funding to support cultural revitalization, healing, and community development initiatives for First Nations people and organizations across Turtle Island. As stewards of the IRSSA funds, the FG Foundation facilitates projects and scholarships that empower communities, preserve traditional knowledge, and promote healing and self-determination.

Future Generations Foundation Announces 2024-2025 Individual Funding Decisions

Future Generations Foundation (formerly NIB Trust Fund) is reaching out to all current and former funding applicants and recipients to inform them of a recent incident that may have affected the privacy of their personal information. We take this matter very seriously and want to assure our applicants and recipients that we are committed to safeguarding their data.

In late May 2023, NIB Trust Fund discovered that its servers were subjected to a ransomware attack, which led to the encryption of the data stored on these servers. Acting swiftly, we immediately took the affected servers offline, purged their contents, and commenced data restoration from our secure backup facilities. We are pleased to report that our servers were successfully recovered within a few days.

Following a thorough investigation involving our internal and external cybersecurity advisors, we have not been able to ascertain whether any data was copied or removed from the compromised servers. It is important to note that no ransom demand has been received by NIB Trust Fund. As of now, we have no evidence of any ongoing exposure of your information, and there have been no reported instances of misuse. However, to ensure complete transparency and as a proactive measure, we want to share information about the incident, our response, and steps you can take to protect your data.

The personal information potentially exposed on the affected servers includes data from your completed Application Form for the Education Program. This information may include:

We reiterate that we have no confirmation that this information was copied or removed from our servers, but it could have been exposed and potentially used for fraudulent purposes, such as identity theft.

As part of our commitment to data security and your privacy, we have taken the following actions:

Erased and reconstructed the contents of the compromised servers.

Enhanced monitoring of our systems to detect any unusual behavior.

Updated our anti-malware and intrusion detection software.

Conducted refresher training for our staff on cybersecurity awareness and email hygiene.

Implemented multi-factor authentication for access to our systems.

Ottawa, September 28, 2023 — Today the National Indian Brotherhood Trust Fund (NIBTF) announced the launch of the Beyond Reconciliation $100 Million Fundraising Campaign – a landmark initiative aimed at addressing the profound impacts of the Indian Residential Schools system and uplifting First Nation and Métis individuals and communities. NIBTF also announced the change of its name to Future Generations Foundation (FGF) today. 

In alignment with the FGF's mission to reach beyond reconciliation to empower future generations and create lasting impacts for First Nation and Métis peoples, families, and communities, the Campaign aims to provide critical resources in education, culture, language, and healing, bridging historical gaps and fostering positive change for generations to come.

To kick start the campaign, TD Bank Group (TD) has pledged a transformative donation of $5 million through the TD Ready Commitment, the Bank’s global corporate citizenship platform.

Despite a track record of touching over 184,161 lives in the past five years, limited available funding has compelled the Future Generations Foundation to decline approximately 55% of individual applicants and 63% of group applicants requests for funding. The Beyond Reconciliation Campaign aims to narrow these gaps and make a significant difference. FGF and TD invite partners, allies, corporations, and philanthropic collaborators to join hands in driving change. The campaign will support vital initiatives in community development, addressing the deep-rooted challenges faced by First Nation and Métis communities.

The NIB Trust Fund supports a wide range of activities for First Nations and Métis applicants pursuing education, including but not limited to:

The Individual Call for Applications is open to First Nations and Métis individuals who will be over the age of 18 by Dec. 31, 2023, with a valid Social Insurance Number.  All educational activities must take place between Sept. 1, 2023, and Aug. 31, 2024. NIB Trust Fund Announces the 2023-2024 Individual Call for Applications is Now Open 

The NIB Trust Fund approves $9.8 Million for the 2023-2024 year to First Nation and Métis organizations, communities, and governments. 

OTTAWA, March 24, 2023 - The NIB Trust Fund is pleased to share that 2023-2024 groups and organizations have been notified of funding decisions. This year, the NIB Trust Fund Board of Trustees approved a total of $9.8 Million to 87 group applicants. 

During the 2023-2024 Call, Organization Qualified Donees and Charitable organizations applied for funding for periods of up to five years, for amounts varying from $12,000 to $365,800 for programming aimed at education, healing and reconciliation, training certification, and cultural and traditional knowledge building.

The NIB Trust Fund allocates funds in accordance with the 2007 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Funds are available to First Nation and Métis individuals, governments, and organizations as part of ongoing healing and reconciliation work. The 2023-2024 group funding allocation brings the total funding awarded by the NIB Trust Fund to group beneficiaries to $59.8 Million to-date.

OTTAWA, February 16, 2023 – It is with great humility and honour that the NIB Trust Fund recognizes a gift of $50,000 from Canadian Western Bank (CWB), funds that will help increase economic prosperity by providing further opportunity for education and employment in First Nation communities. This gift from CWB will support group projects like the one led by the First Nations Education Foundation and Haisla Nation Council in Kitamaat, BC. With the help of NIB Trust Fund grants, this collaborative community-based program pioneered a language revitalization project that will keep the Haisla language alive for generations to come.

Each year the NIB Trust Fund supports First Nation communities, organizations, and students by funding programming that addresses the harms inflicted by Residential Schools and enhances the welfare of First Nation individuals and communities across the nation. To-date, the NIB Trust Fund has supported projects from 592 First Nation communities and organizations and awarded funding to 7,131 students pursuing post-secondary education, training programs, and traditional, cultural, and language teachings.

OTTAWA, January 27, 2023 – The NIB Trust Fund recognizes Laurentian Bank of Canada for supporting our organization with their gift of $50,000 dollars as part of their ongoing commitment toward reconciliation. This gift from Laurentian Bank will support beneficiaries like Taylor Day, an NIB Trust Fund scholarship recipient and proud member of Akwesasne Mohawk First Nation who graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from Queen’s Law in Kingston in 2022.

Laurentian Bank Supports NIB Trust Fund in the Continued Efforts to address the harm of Residential Schools 

The NIB Trust Fund approves $4.7 Million for the 2022-2023 year for culture, language, and education opportunities. 

OTTAWA, ON - The NIB Trust Fund is pleased to share that 2022-2023 individuals have been notified of funding decisions. This year, the NIB Trust Fund Board of Trustees has approved a total of $4.7 Million to 1205 applicants. 

Recipients were awarded across three categories: award, bursary, and scholarship. Funding from the NIB Trust Fund will support recipients as they pursue culture and language learning, post-secondary education, certification, or training. 

·       115 awards have been approved to recipients who are pursuing culture and language learning. 

·       84 bursaries have been approved to recipients who are pursuing certification or training. 

·       1006 scholarships have been approved to recipients who are pursuing post-secondary education. 

The 2022-2023 funding allocated brings the total funding to individual beneficiaries to $30.15 Million since the NIB Trust Fund was entrusted to administer the residential school settlement funds in 2015. 

The goal of the NIB Trust Fund is to help First Nations and Métis people, organizations, and communities address the long-lasting impacts of the residential school system on Survivors and their descendants and to support education programs aimed at healing and reconciliation over many years. All NIB Trust funding is accessible through a competitive application process. The next Call for Applications for Individuals will take place April 2023 and close in June 2024.

This year, the Trust Fund supported several healing and reconciliation, employment and education, culture, language, and youth and family kinship programs and initiatives for First Nations and Métis people across Turtle Island. 

The NIB Trust Fund is pleased to release the details of the funded programs for the 2022-2023 year. This year, the Trust Fund supported several healing and reconciliation, employment and education, culture, language, and youth and family kinship programs and initiatives for First Nations and Métis people across Turtle Island. 

The NIB Trust Fund Board of Trustees approved $7.52 million in funding to 70 projects. The NIB Trust Fund received 140 applications from First Nations and Métis communities, organizations, cultural and friendship centres, museums, and educational institutions. The projects will be delivered at the community, provincial and national levels.

In accordance with the 2007 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the NIB Trust Fund allocates funds to provide resourcing to create meaningful opportunities that improve the quality of life for First Nations and Métis people. Funds are available to First Nations and Métis individuals, governments, and organizations as part of healing and reconciliation efforts and for the revitalization and support of traditional First Nations and Métis cultures and languages. 

The NIB Trust Fund will release the next Organization Call for Applications in November 2022. Organizations must have Qualified Donee status or a CRA Charitable Number. First Nation communities are encouraged to contact CRA and start their application now for Qualified Donee status as the process can take many months.
